Contact Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (03 9694 0354) for appropriate specimen types before collecting samples

as there are many forms of HLA typing. If in doubt contact RHH Pathology (x68774)

Samples are dispatched to Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service, Cnr Cavanagh & Balston Streets, Southbank, Melbourne (Tel: 03 9694 0354) Mon - Thurs.

Friday dispatches will not routinely occur (see notes below).

Samples taken on a Thursday MUST arrive IN THE R.H.H. LABORATORY by NO LATER THAN 1200 hrs on that day to enable transport and testing to be undertaken within the stipulated timeframe (generally 3 days), otherwise RE-COLLECTION OF SPECIMENS WILL BE NECESSARY. Sample collection immediately prior to long weekends is strongly discouraged for this reason.

NOTE: Due to the increased fragility of leukaemic cells, it is particularly important to dispatch HLA typing samples on leukaemic patients by no later than the following day. As a result, HLA samples on leukaemic patients should not be collected on Thursdays after 1200 hrs OR on Fridays. All other samples, if received on a Friday, may be dispatched the following Monday (if still within testing timeframes).

NOTE: Pathology is charged hundreds of dollars EXTRA to deliver any specimen to a mainland laboratory on either the same day or on a weekend, so this should be avoided unless deemed clinically critical.
